Hengill
The Hengill area is a high-temperature geothermal area about 20 kilometers southeast of Reykjavík and is ideal for a variety of outdoor activities all year round. Tens of thousands of Icelanders and foreign tourists enjoy outdoor activities in the area, which has about 130 kilometers of marked trails, information signs, the Múlasel hiking cabin, and a map showing hiking trails and cairned routes. Orkuveitan has been responsible for this work since 1991, in consultation with local authorities in the area. Outside the operational areas of Orka náttúrunnar's geothermal power plants, the area is open to the public, but special caution should be exercised near hot springs and hot streams, as well as near boreholes due to hot steam and the risk of gas pollution.
While people are welcome to enjoy the magnificent nature and outdoor area of Hengill, we ask recreationists to treat the area with respect and minimize disturbance. The Hengill area is on an active volcanic belt and is a unique geothermal area with an unusual amount of surface water. There you can find hot springs, lava craters, lush spots, rivers, and lakes. There are also hot streams with unique aquatic life and associated ecosystems, and wetlands with distinctive wetland vegetation of high conservation value. The ground is varied and rarely withstands heavy traffic, but by following the paths, we can ensure that the area can continue to be enjoyed.
Footpaths

The utility company maintains a trail maintenance team for the Hengill area. Please send any feedback on the condition of the trails to hengill@orkuveitan.is.
